cutting test

This image documents an early experiment in fabricating the spinal structure using interlocking flat-cut materials, likely paper or thin leather, based on my design elements. Upon assembling the components, I found the result to be aesthetically unsuccessful; the complexity of the interspersed flat shapes created a “tedious” and “strange” visual effect rather than the powerful, organic form I intended. This process led me to a critical evaluation of the material’s inherent limitations. I concluded that flat materials are fundamentally incapable of rendering the necessary three-dimensional volume and intricate detail that this bone-like structure required. This experiment was therefore a valuable failure, as it solidified my decision to abandon this flat-pack methodology and pivot to a more suitable technology—namely, 3D resin printing—to achieve the desired final sculptural effect.
